El Peñón gets (deservedly) all the attention, but it's not the only way to see Guatapé's reservoir from above, and it's definitely not the quietest.
The lookout behind the church
A short walk uphill from the main plaza, behind the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, gives you an elevated view over the town's rooftops and a partial reservoir glimpse — without a single tour bus in sight. It's a five-minute detour most day-trippers never make.
Along the malecón, away from the crowded section
The lakefront walkway (malecón San Juan del Puerto) stretches further than the busy central section most photos are taken from. Walking a few extra minutes in either direction gets you quieter water views with far fewer people in frame.
From the water itself, off-peak
A private lancha (rather than a shared party boat) hired for early morning or later afternoon gets you reservoir views without the midday boat traffic — and often better light for photos as a bonus.
Why locals don't just climb El Peñón for the view
740 steps and an entrance fee is a lot to do regularly — locals who want a lake view without the tourist logistics tend to use these lower-effort spots instead, especially for a quick evening walk rather than a full outing.
